Yesterday, four YEPP Vice Presidents, along with the YEPP Office, visited the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO’s strategic military headquarters located in Mons, Belgium. SHAPE plays a crucial role in planning and executing NATO operations worldwide, ensuring security and stability for its member nations.

In 3 consecutive briefings, YEPP interacted with NATO military and civilian officials. Discussions focused on NATO’s mission to uphold democracy, freedom, and the sovereignty of its member states to prevent conflicts and maintain peace. We also gained insights into the Alliance’s structure and hierarchy, learning about its division in Strategic level, Operational level and Tactical level.

On top of that, YEPP was briefed on NATO’s strategic approach to military operations and engaged in discussions on key geopolitical challenges, including energy prices and supply security in Europe, sanctions against Russia and their implications, and the risk of foreign influence in countries like Moldova and Georgia.

Additionally, the visit provided an opportunity to explore NATO’s extensive partnerships. With over 30 partnerships worldwide, NATO fosters collaboration that enhances capacity building and knowledge sharing in defense and security.

NATO’s six key areas of strategic interest were also highlighted, including the High North, the Baltic Sea and the Baltics, the Western Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Poland, and the Black Sea. Depending on the region, NATO engages in various critical activities, such as aviation operations, weapons testing, vigilance and monitoring of Russian activities, increasing protection for Ukraine at the Polish border, and conducting Sea Guardian operations to counter terrorist threats.

Finally, it was emphasized the importance of effectively communicating NATO’s mission and the necessity of strong defense strategies to the public. As global security challenges evolve, ensuring that societies understand the critical role of defense and preparedness remains a top priority.

The visit was a unique experience to learn more on how military trainings and operations are conducted by NATO and how it interacts with European Institutions. YEPP remains committed to advocating for a strong, united, and resilient Europe in collaboration with its NATO allies.
