YEPP gathers in Bucharest to discuss Human Mobility

Youth of the European People's Party

Bucharest, Romania – Delegates of the Youth of the European People’s Party (YEPP) will this weekend assemble in Bucharest to discuss the changes and challenges to human mobility. The theme of the conference is “Human Mobility: Migration & Demographics” and will see a host of speakers from politics, academia and business backgrounds brief YEPP attendees on the ever-changing area of human mobility. The event will be organised by the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
Recent years have seen migration reaching unprecedented levels and this trend has had negative effects for many countries, in particular, the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
Speaking ahead of the opening of the Council, TNL President Mara Mares said: “I am excited to welcome YEPP delegates to Bucharest to debate these important issues. According to our most recent Eurostat numbers, Romania is the European country that is most affected by brain drain. More worryingly, almost one in five working-age Romanians (19.7%) lived in another European Union country in 2017. The worst part is that the government seems to encourage or ignore the brain drain phenomenon and it’s up to us as young people to ensure that we can find solutions to change this trend.”
Acting President of YEPP Jim Lefebre said “YEPP is very thankful to our hosts and organisers for facilitating this meeting.  I am looking forward to working on possible solutions to the developing problem of brain drain in our countries. We need to look at innovative ways to make staying at home more attractive to young people. This will, in turn, benefit local communities, industries and economies.”
YEPP is the largest youth political organisation in Europe and this Romanian Conference will see 90 delegates from 34 European countries in attendance. The event will be hosted by TNL Romania in cooperation with MIERT, Transylvania.
