With deep concern and unwavering commitment to democratic values, the Youth of the European People’s Party (YEPP) strongly condemns the decision of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, which could lead to the arrest and imposition of restrictive measures against Petro Poroshenko, the fifth President of Ukraine and the leader of the European Solidarity party, an EPP-associated member. This unprecedented move raises significant questions about political motivation and risks undermining the internal unity and democratic progress that Ukraine has worked so hard to achieve.
Petro Poroshenko’s dedication to Ukraine is undeniable. As a statesman and defender of national sovereignty, he has played a crucial role in building a strong and resilient Ukrainian Armed Forces, securing the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, and fostering a unified Ukrainian national identity. Since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion, Poroshenko’s team has contributed over 6.2 billion UAH to support the country’s defenders—an unparalleled demonstration of his loyalty and service to Ukraine’s future. The accusations of high treason against someone who has fought tirelessly for Ukraine’s European course appear deeply suspect and politically motivated.
At this critical juncture, YEPP calls on President Zelensky to reconsider this divisive decision and instead focus on fostering national unity and reinforcing Ukraine’s democratic foundations. We appeal to the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Parliament, and our political allies across Europe to stand with us in defending Ukraine’s democratic integrity. Internal political pluralism and unity are essential for Ukraine’s path toward EU membership and victory in the ongoing fight for freedom. Now, more than ever, Ukraine must remain united, resilient, and true to its European values.
